First of all, I mentioned above that I'm a cognitive animal behaviorist (yes, I have a degree in this and everything official), but I'm also a dog trainer and dog whisperer with 17 years of experience, I've written three nationally published dog training books, and I've appeared in the national news all across the U.S. (places like CNN, The Washington Post, NBC, Fox, etc.).
But let's throw all that out for a minute and get down to the brass tacks. I mean I'm proud of those accomplishments, but what's even more important to you right now is this...
I started learning about puppies when I was just a kid and lived with Yorkshire terriers, Scottish terriers, and an occasional mixed breed dog.
At one point as an adult/dog trainer I added four puppies in five years. Yikes! Remind me not to do that again ;)
I learned more about raising puppies because I did it over and over again. I lived with my choices. And found out what works and what doesn’t work.

with a puppy and puppy training easy and quick and fun is picking out

It really is that simple.
Most dog owners murder their chances of success before they even begin.
How can I say this?
Because I’ve brought home a puppy that didn’t match my needs or my lifestyle ...and teaching puppy potty training, crate training, and getting a puppy to stop jumping, digging, chewing running away, or pulling on a leash wasn’t easy for me either in the beginning.
I remember... the first dog I bought when I was on my own. I had fallen in love with my sister’s golden retriever and I wanted a golden too.
I thought all golden retrievers were alike. (My first mistake. Thinking all dogs act the same.)
A friend said I should take the most active puppy from the litter and I listened to him. (My second mistake. Listening to my friend who knew nothing about dogs. There’s much more to choosing a good puppy than activity level.)
During the car ride home the new puppy, Amanda, slept quietly.
And I swear, that was the last time she slept!
She raced through the house all the time... stole a loaf of bread or stick of butter from the counters in my kitchen...
... ignored my yelling “Come!!!” (She looked at me and took off running the other way.)
And ate the carpet (not a floor rug, but the carpet!)
I knew I was in trouble when I came home one day and she
had chewed a
hole in the plaster wall. (It’s the truth. My Dad had to come over that
weekend and teach me how to plaster and fill a hole in the wall.)I loved my dog, but she was driving me crazy!
But I refused to give up. It took me three long, wild, crazy years to discover the one little thing about Amanda and all dogs that would change my life forever.
And Amanda was not the only puppy I brought into my life.
I was a magnet for puppies that needed help.

was given up by his family because he chewed anything wood
(table legs, end tables, chairs...) and stole food from the counter,
Red
was hyperactive and wasn’t potty trained when his family left him at
the shelter,Pip was abused by men, women, and children and was timid, barky, and submissively peed as soon as someone looked at her,
Logan pulled so hard on the leash, I needed a horse lead just to hold on to
him in the beginning. (He could snap a leather leash with no problem.),
